Pro Football Network NFL insider Adam Caplan made a straight forward statement this week about the Chicago Bears' draft plans in 2024.

Caplan point blank said that Chicago won't pass on USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick. He noted that since Bears general manager Ryan Poles didn't draft quarterback Justin Fields that there is no allegiance to the former Ohio State standout.

From PFN: Bears GM Ryan Poles didn’t draft Justin Fields, so there’s no allegiance to the dual-threat QB. If USC star QB Caleb Williams checks out well during the pre-draft process, he will be the selection for the Bears with the No. 1 overall pick that Chicago received from Carolina.

This team must get the quarterback situation right going forward and for the first time in decades. Fields has his fifth-year option decision due by March 2, and Chicago would obviously decline it and look to trade him if they decide they’re going to draft Williams here.

If this is the path the Bears take in the draft, it could solicit an angry reaction from some players.

Chicago wide receiver Darnell Mooney, for example, strongly endorsed Fields as the Bears' franchise quarterback this week.

Chicago isn't guaranteed to have the No. 1 overall pick. For now, they're in that slot via the Carolina Panthers' first round pick (which the Bears acquired ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft). The Panthers are currently a game in front of the New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals for the worst record in the NFL with three games left to play.
