If the Chicago Bears are going to make some noise in 2023, then quarterback Justin Fields will need to take a major step forward in his development.
Fields showed last season that he can be a game-changer. But he has to become more consistent for the Bears to get to the post-season.
Part of the reason Fields wasn't more consistent in 2022 was the lack of offensive weapons around him.
Fields will be better set up for success in 2023 with wide receiver DJ Moore on the roster, plus the addition of first-round draft pick Darnell Wright — the Bears' expected new starting right tackle.
Not only does Fields have better weapons around him in 2023, but he's also "light years ahead" of where he was a year ago at this time, according to Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.
"Where he was at this time last year to where he is now, I think he's just light-years ahead of where he was," said Getsy this past weekend (via the Chicago Tribune). "And I feel like he has a ton more to grow going forward. So we're excited to try to get the best out of him moving forward and keep working toward where we think he can go."
That's certainly an encouraging sign for the Bears. Fields obviously has to go out and prove Getsy correct. But it sounds like Getsy is confident that Fields is prepared to take a major step forward as Chicago's quarterback in 2023.
Fields doesn't need to be Joe Burrow for the Bears to find success. But if he can get in the conversation as one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL, it should be enough to lead Chicago on a playoff run this fall/winter.
