Bengals’ bad problem just got worse following latest update for rookie edge rusher Shemar Stewart
The Bengals defense catches another tough break.
A tough break for the Cincinnati Bengals just got a bit more serious. Shemar Stewart has dealt with a lingering injury for much of the season, but now, it will cost the rookie edge rusher a notable amount of time to try to get back to full strength. Considering the unit’s health already, it’s bad news for Cincinnati.
Shemar Stewart placed on injured reserve
A knee injury has forced the Bengals to place their first-round rookie lineman on injured reserve. He will have to miss at least four games, only compounding an issue for Cincy’s defense. Myles Murphy and Joseph Ossai are projected to be the key edge rushers for the Bengals against Pittsburgh.
The Bengals defensive line has struggled in both the pass and run game. Missing Trey Hendrickson, and Stewart at times, has been a notable reason for that issue with the unit. Hendrickson is set to miss another game in Week 11, and it is unknown when he will return to action. The star pass rusher did not practice all week due to hip and pelvis injuries.
As for Stewart, the first-year campaign for him has not gone quite as planned. Stewart has totaled six tackles and one quarterback hit in five games played for Cincy. It’s clearly been a learning process for the physical lineman, which was to be somewhat expected.
The rookie missed four games earlier in the season with an ankle injury, so availability has truly been the biggest concern for him as a rookie. We will see where the Bengals sit in the standings once he is able to hit the field again.
Stewart will be eligible to return in Week 15 for the Bengals defense. We could see QB Joe Burrow back before the young defender.
