By selecting Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims with the 18th pick in the first round, the Cincinnati Bengals crossed off a huge item on their NFL Draft to-do list. But the work is far from over.
Cincinnati has nine more picks to make barring any trades, and three of those picks are slated to happen Friday night during Day 2 of the draft.
Here are the three biggest needs the Bengals have yet to address.
1. Defensive tackle
The Bengals were in play to select Byron Murphy II before the Seattle Seahawks swiped him with the 16th pick. Fortunately, only one other defensive tackle went off the board Thursday night, which leaves plenty of options to fill the biggest need Cincinnati has remaining.
Expect the Bengals to opt for a defensive tackle tonight. They'll look for a more all-around player first before targeting a true nose tackle later in the draft.
Potential options: Illinois DT Johnny Newton, Michigan DT Kris Jenkins, Clemson DT Ruke Orhorhoro
2. Wide receiver
A Day 2 receiver is always on the table when the Bengals are in need of a pass catcher. Replacing Tyler Boyd's snaps is the mission here, and there are a handful of slot guys who can stretch the field and also play outside. That's the type the Bengals are looking for.
Value at the position may be better in the third round, but it all depends on who comes off the board before the 49th pick.
Potential options: Florida State WR Keon Coleman, USC WR Brenden Rice, Washington WR Jalen McMillan
3. Cornerback
Cincinnati has drafted a cornerback in the second round in back to back drafts. If they're going to take one early, it'll be with the 49th pick. They could use a worthy challenger to DJ Turner II, but it won't just be any kind of corner. The Bengals like to draft fast defensive backs. Anything above a 4.5 40-yard dash time can probably be crossed out.
The first round featured just three cornerbacks go off the board. Value is expected to be had in the second round.
Potential options: Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinistry, Iowa CB Cooper DeJean, Rutgers CB Max Melton
Other positions that could use some help
- Interior offensive line: Finding a Ted Karras replacement for 2025 is a likely goal starting tonight, but could wait until Day 3.
- Edge defender: Trey Hendrickson's trade request won't make the Bengals budge, but a long-term need exists at the position.
- Running back: The earliest I could see them going here is the third round, but they will likely draft a running back at some point.
