The Cincinnati Bengals started off with the wrong foot in New Orleans.
All the talk about Joe Burrow returning to the Superdome where he put together an all-time performance to win the National Championship disappeared when the first two drives resulted in no points.
In those two, the Bengals' offense showed some of the same issues they've had all season long. Joe Mixon failed in pass protection in the first drive to allow a sack that would end the team's first offensive drive.
In the following series, Burrow failed to move the sticks with his legs instead forcing a deep throw that missed the mark.
But finally, it all came together in the third drive. The Bengals put together a 12-play drive that was good for 75 yards and a touchdown.
In that play, Cincinnati ran the ball with tempo, keeping the Saints from making any substitutions. Mixon and Samaje Perine combined for a couple of 5-yard runs.
But most importantly, Burrow went 7-for-7 with 47 yards and the passing touchdown to Mixon.
The Bengals' offense needs to continue to work on those quick passes and their ability to attack underneath.
Otherwise, they'll keep struggling against two-high defenses that intentionally focus on taking away the deep throws.
The challenge will be to put together more of these drives. Zac Taylor needs to give Cincinnati some answers and change-ups to this attack.
As of this writing, the Bengals are tied with the Saints 7-7 with 12:39 remaining in the second quarter.
