The Cincinnati Bengals have done some of their best work this free agency in the dark.

First it was Orlando Brown Jr. agreeing to terms about an hour away from midnight, and now another Jr. in Irv Smith joins the party right before the clock struck 12.

Most were asleep when the news broke, but not Pro Bowl wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase.

Chase let his thoughts be known just minutes after reports surfaced that Smith would be his newest teammate.

The more offensive weapons for Cincinnati, the better. Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd all benefit from a talented player like Smith occupying the tight end spot.

Interestingly enough, Smith is in line to be the Bengals' third starting tight end since Chase arrived two years ago. C.J. Uzomah was replaced by Hayden Hurst, and now Hurst's spot is being taken by Smith.

Including postseason play, Uzomah and Hurst averaged 65 receptions, 597 yards, and five touchdowns over the last two years in the Bengals' offense. That becomes the expectation for Smith should he be the starter after the NFL Draft concludes.

Smith and Chase played in the SEC at the same time, but never played against each other. The only opportunity was when Alabama blew out LSU 29-0 in 2018. Smith had 64 yards on four receptions in the shutout while Chase didn't play as a freshman.

The two will be teammates now five years later, which makes Chase very excited.
