When Sunday afternoon rolls around, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will be dressed in street clothes and wearing an earpiece on the sideline while Jake Browning is under center in an attempt to kickstart a playoff push.
Burrow suffered a wrist injury last week that has ended his 2023 season, and his road to recovery will start shortly after Sunday's game.
Former Bengals player Dave Lapham, who's currently the team's radio color commentator, told 700WLW earlier this week that Burrow will likely have surgery on his wrist next week.
Lapham has been with the organization for several decades and has an ear where most do not inside the building. He's established a reputation for picking up insider info, specifically regarding the NFL Draft and even some free agency nuggets. It stands to reason that he'd hear about Burrow's injury and his upcoming operation to repair it.
Most football injuries that require surgery require a waiting period between the injury and the surgery due to swelling. Burrow's throwing hand was no exception following the play that ended his season last Thursday evening. Once the swelling subsides, the operation can commence to its fullest effectiveness.
The earlier the surgery, the earlier the recovery process can begin. Burrow isn't expected to recover in time for a potential playoff appearance, but there's no reason to think he won't be ready for offseason work in the Spring.
We won't know for sure until the surgery happens successfully. Per Lapham, that will take place next week.
Bengals: Joe Burrow’s injury problem has a clear, yet difficult, solution
Another season-ending injury for Burrow is cause for the Bengals to change how they look at offensive linemen.
