Cincinnati Bengals fans can't stop thinking about how Joe Burrow has bested Patrick Mahomes three times, all of them in high-stakes games. And while the recent victory still tastes sweet, Burrow knows how likely it is both teams share a rematch in January.
"That was a fun one," Burrow said in the CBS broadcast after the game. "But I know we'll be seeing them again."
The Bengals quarterback might be right. But he's on the verge of besting Mahomes yet again without even playing him.
Per NFL Communications, Burrow is one good game away to accomplish something that Mahomes didn't in his first three seasons in the league. Surpassing 20 games with a passer rating of 100 or higher in his first three seasons in the league.
That might sound like an unsurprising stat but it's actually a historic one.
Here are the players with the most games with a passer rating of 100 or higher in their first three seasons in NFL history:
- Dak Prescott, 24
- Russell Wilson, 24
- Joe Burrow, 20*
- Justin Herbert, 20*
- Lamar Jackson, 20
- Patrick Mahomes, 20
*currently playing third season.
Now granted, Mahomes was a backup to Alex Smith as a rookie but considering Burrow also missed seven games as a rookie for the Bengals, it's still an impressive feat.
The Bengals are probably more concerned about winning ballgames and securing the best possible seed in the AFC but this stat serves as another reminder that Burrow is in the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks.
Next up for Burrow and the Bengals are the Cleveland Browns, who boast the 21st pass defense per DVOA. The Bengals quarterback will be seeking revenge after a Monday Night Football loss to their division rival in Week 8.
If he can complement a win with a 100-passer-rating game, that will be the cherry on top.
