With Cincinnati Bengals cornerback DJ Turner II out with a broken clavicle, a replacement is needed to round out the position group.
The Bengals went and claimed former New England Patriots cornerback Marco Wilson off waivers to take Turner's roster spot as the latter is now on the Reserve/Injured list.
Wilson was selected with a fourth-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He spent the vast majority of his first three seasons in Arizona, playing in 43 games (37 starts) and recorded all three of his career interceptions during the 2022 season. He was waived by his original team towards the end of the 2023 season and was soon claimed by the Patriots.
The Patriots kept Wilson throughout the 2024 offseason and he earned a roster spot in Jerod Mayo's first defense as head coach. He played a total of 206 snaps in 10 games for the Patriots, including 15 snaps as a backup cornerback in Week 1 against the Bengals. He posted two tackles against Cincinnati in what ended up being a 16-10 victory for New England. He was waived by the Patriots Monday.
Wilson's NFL career has been rather quiet, but the end of his college career had quite a moment.
Yes, this is the same Marco Wilson who threw a shoe in college
Wilson was a four-year player for Florida and his second-to-last game for the Gators in 2020 was memorable for one reason.
After making a tackle on third down with just two minutes remaining against LSU, Wilson got a hold of tight Kole Taylor's cleat and chucked it in celebration. The only problem was this resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that extended the drive.
LSU would kick a go-ahead field goal with 23 seconds remaining. Florida, ranked 6th in the country at the time, missed the tying field goal in the final seconds. Florida would go on to lose to Alabama in the SEC Championship the next week.
It's been nearly four years since that incident and Wilson is now on his third NFL team. He'll provide immediate depth behind Cam Taylor-Britt and rookie Josh Newton, who figure to be the starters going forward without Turner available.
