The Cincinnati Bengals now know when offseason workouts will be held this spring.
NFL rules state that voluntary offseason programs are to be devised into three phases. Phase one introduces strength and conditioning training along with physical rehabilitation starting later this month. Phase two brings in on-field workouts and walkthroughs. Phase three involves the beginning of organized team activities like 7-on-7 and 11-on-11, and mandates players to be present for the conclusion of them.
Players such as Trey Hendrickson, who's looking to get paid before he shows up to any sort of practice with the rest of the team.
Hendrickson alluded to his desire to be present for OTAs during his recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, but indicated that not signing a contract extension beforehand would be a problem.
"When you have things like OTAs coming and guys like Sam Hubbard, who's been a tremendous captain for our team last year, that leaves a vacancy for that," Hendrickson said. "And I'm excited to fill that, but how do we reach that before we get there? And those are the things that matter. When you're talking about a Super Bowl, it's in the little things and the little details."
If the Bengals want Hendrickson to be present for those workouts, we now know when a deal needs to be signed.
Bengals Offseason Workout Schedule
- First Day: April 21
- Rookie Minicamp: May 9
- OTA Offseason Workouts: May 27-29, June 2-4
- Mandatory Minicamp: June 10-12
Along with veteran workouts, Cincinnati's incoming rookie class will have one day on May 9 to work out together before joining their teammates later in the month.
May 27 is the start of OTAs and on-field workouts, and June 10 is when mandatory minicamp begins. Hendrickson could be subject to fines for skipping the latter, but for the sake of getting a new deal, that may be a cost he's willing to pay.
If Hendrickson and the Bengals can't reach a deal by then, it's entirely possible that Hendrickson would skip out on training camp as well, which is what happened with Ja'Marr Chase last year. The official start to training camp will be announced at a later date.
For now, the Bengals have around two months to get things sorted with Hendrickson before it becomes an on-field issue.
