Missing out on the playoffs means the Cincinnati Bengals are better positioned to land an elite talent in the 2024 NFL Draft.
One such name that has been associated with the team via fans and mock drafts is Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, who made his declaration for the draft official Tuesday evening.
A three-year starter for the Bulldogs, Bowers established himself as college football's top tight end ever since he hauled in 13 touchdowns passes during the first of two National Championship seasons for Georgia. He went on to become a back-to-back winner of the John Mackey Award, which recognizes the best tight end in the country, in 2022 and 2023.
This past season was Bowers' "worst" from a volume production standpoint, hauling in 56 receptions for 717 yards and six touchdowns, but he also missed four games due to a high ankle sprain injury. He still led all FBS tight ends in yards per route run with an average of 2.65, and was sixth in yards after catch per reception at 8.7.
Bowers' draft prospects may end up being affected by his recent injury clouding his medical report, but he's otherwise one of the cleanest players in this upcoming class. The position he plays also makes him a clear name to watch for Cincinnati.
The Bengals have zero tight ends under contract for the 2024 season. They'll be interested in re-signing veterans such as Drew Sample and Tanner Hudson in the coming months, but there will be a need for a true starter.
Bowers can become that should he fall to the Bengals' first-round pick, which is expected to be in the middle of the round.
