The bye week was just what the doctor ordered for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and his right calf. Burrow's calf injury has hindered him for the past three months, and it appears to be officially behind him now.
Per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Burrow has finally reached 100% health ahead of a matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
"Joe Burrow, actually, for the first time all season, he is 100% … he dealt with a calf injury for basically every single second of the season until really this week."
The Week 7 bye has been the landmark Cincinnati has circled for a while for Burrow to reach this point. Burrow has been off the Bengals' injury report for a while, but didn't play like his normal self until Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals. The fourth-year passer threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns in a crucial 34-20 victory that day.
A week later, Burrow continued to throw and move up to his standard during the first half against the Seattle Seahawks, but struggled to connect with his receivers in the final 30 minutes. Despite the drop off, his movement abilities were still apparent and the Bengals managed to win close, 17-13.
With an added week of rest on top of these performances, the Burrow we see going forward is expected to be the version everyone has become accustomed to, per The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
The Bengals will need every part of 100% Burrow this afternoon in facing the 5-2 49ers in Levi's Stadium. His last time facing against the Red and Gold was one of the most impressive outings of his young career, though the Bengals lost in overtime at home.
A different result today would get the Bengals over .500 for the first time this season, and in position to make a second-half surge in the AFC.
