Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is going to receive a massive contract extension this offseason.

It's not a matter of if it'll happen, but rather when it will happen.

Burrow and the Bengals don't seem to be in a huge hurry to get a deal done, but that's to be expected at this stage of the offseason. There's no point in rushing to get a deal done in May.

The expectation is that Burrow will become the highest-paid player in the NFL when he receives his new extension.

Committing that much cash to a quarterback can make it difficult for a franchise to build a championship-caliber roster due to salary cap constraints.

That's the main reason why it's been suggested plenty this offseason that Burrow could sign a lengthy extension (a la Patrick Mahomes) which would give the Bengals some flexibility on future deals (wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are also in line for lucrative extensions).

Burrow confirmed on Tuesday while speaking with reporters for the first time this offseason that his teammates getting paid is on his mind as he negotiates with Cincinnati.

The superstar quarterback said that having teammates who are in line to get paid has been a "focal point" during his negotiations. Burrow also noted that he knows what's best for the team when it comes to his extension.

It seems pretty clear that Burrow isn't going to sign an extension that hampers the Bengals' ability to build a Super Bowl-caliber roster on an annual basis. And the best way to do that is by signing a long contract (8 to 10 years).

Burrow seems more focused on winning championships than setting records with his contract — especially considering Mahomes will likely have his contract reworked after Burrow agrees to a new deal (so any record that Burrow might set, probably won't be a record for long).

Bengals fans shouldn't worry too much about this deal, even though it could still be two months before it gets done. It's going to work out and Cincinnati is going to be able to continue to make important moves to make the franchise better. Burrow is going to make sure of that.
