The worst has been confirmed for the Cincinnati Bengals and quarterback Joe Burrow. Head coach Zac Taylor told media members Friday afternoon that Burrow is out for the remainder of the season after injuring his right wrist against the Baltimore Ravens.
Officially, Burrow has a torn ligament in his wrist that will require season-ending surgery.
While there's speculation regarding whether or not Burrow's injury occurred prior to the game (and an on-going investigation surrounding it), Taylor mentioned that the wrist wrap Burrow was wearing Wednesday was "completely unrelated" to the injury.
The most likely conclusion is Burrow tore the ligament during the game. He had taken a hit by Ravens edge defender Jadeveon Clowney the play before he exited the game, and landed on his right wrist.
"He had an acute injury. Likely on the play before his last one," Taylor said.
No matter how it happened, it's a brutal loss that will make it nearly impossible for the Bengals to make a playoff push. They're sitting at 5-5 with a 1-4 record against AFC opponents, and have yet to win an AFC North game in three tries.
Starting in Burrow's place will be backup Jake Browning, who finished Thursday night's bloodbath with 68 yards and a touchdown on 8-14 passing. The Bengals still have the toughest remaining schedule out of any NFL team.
It's just about the worst news the Bengals could've gotten today, with the only solace being Burrow should be fine for the offseason. Seven games are left until then.
Injury-filled Bengals vs. Ravens game is latest example of Thursday Night Football’s vile greed
Playing football on short rest is already ridiculous. Putting two AFC North teams in that environment is asking for disaster.
