Just when it looked like Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown was locked in for another year, he's back in the mix for a general manager gig.
Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Jacksonville Jaguars are requesting to interview Brown for their GM vacancy.
Brown is reportedly one of at least four initial candidates for the job, joining Chicago Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham, Los Angeles Chargers assistant GM Chad Alexander, New York Giants assistant GM Brandon Brown, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant GM Mike Greenberg.
Jacksonville officially hired head coach Liam Coen on January 24, just two days after firing GM Trent Baalke. The decision to part ways with Baalke ultimately got Coen back in the mix as he spurned the Buccaneers following an agreement to make him the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the league.
It's an unusual way to go about restarting from the top, but the way the Jaguars handled has them involving their new head coach in the search for a new GM instead of the other way around.
Brown was recently a finalist for the New York Jets GM gig after interviewing with them twice, but lost out to former Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey. This was the same day Coen was officially hired by the Jaguars. Brown received interest in the New England Patriots' de facto GM spot last year as well.
Brown's been in Cincinnati since 2021. He started as a scout but quickly rose to become an important high-ranking member of director of player personnel Duke Tobin's staff. If he does get the job in Jacksonville, the Bengals would receive two third-round compensatory picks in the next two NFL Drafts since he'd be a minority hire.
Keeping Brown would be preferred for the Bengals, but they'd at least be compensated for losing him so late in the hiring process. Jacksonville will be the last team to hire a GM, so if Brown doesn't leave, he'll officially be staying in Cincinnati for another season.
