The Cincinnati Bengals have already faced and defeated quarterback Josh Dobbs this season. They won't get a chance to do it again on his second team.
Per multiple reports and an official announcement from the franchise, the Minnesota Vikings are starting Nick Mullens instead of Dobbs this Saturday against the Bengals.
Mullens, a seventh-year player, has been with the Vikings since 2022 as a backup. He's started 17 games in his career, mostly with the San Francisco 49ers, but he's logged just one start since 2021.
Earlier this season, Minnesota placed Mullens on the Reserve/Injured with a back injury just a couple weeks before starter Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles. Both injuries spurred the Vikings to trade for Dobbs, who had been starting for the Arizona Cardinals in place of an injured Kyler Murray. Dobbs' fifth start of the year came against the Bengals, a 34-20 loss to Cincinnati at home in which he threw two interceptions and completed less than 50% of his passes.
Dobbs was traded to Minnesota on the day of the trade deadline, October 31st, and came in off the bench the first week he was on the roster. He led the Vikings to a heroic 31-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons and went on to start four more games while Mullens was still recovering on I.R.
Dobbs' cinderella story soon came to an end during the Vikings' ugly 3-0 win over the Las Vegas Raiders when Mullens came in for him to finish the game. The Vikings are sticking with their original backup for the remainder of the season, and Mullens' first test is to beat the Bengals on their own turf.
Unfortunately, this eliminates the possibility of the Bengals defeating the same quarterback on two different teams in the same season, something that would've been incredibly unique.
Cincinnati now has two practices to game plan for a new quarterback to face come Saturday afternoon.
