Bengals officially land on Jake Browning’s backup, rework quarterback depth chart with Joe Burrow set to miss months of action
Cincinnati’s quarterback room has been finalized.
Quarterback Joe Burrow, who will be out for at least three months with turf toe, has officially been placed on the Reserve/Injured list by the Cincinnati Bengals. The move opened up a roster spot for Jake Browning’s new backup.
Cincinnati announced QB Brett Rypien has been signed to the active roster, and QBs Sean Clifford and Mike White have officially joined the practice squad.
Brett Rypien gets first crack as Bengals’ new backup QB
Cincinnati originally signed Rypien to the practice squad in August directly after he was released by the Minnesota Vikings during final cuts.
The nephew of former NFL QB and Super Bowl XXVI MVP Mark Rypien, Rypien a former undrafted free agent signing of the Denver Broncos. He spent the first four years of his career in Denver, playing in eight games and making three starts. He’s since had stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, and most recently with the team the Bengals are about to face on Sunday.
Clifford and White are the new faces in the QB room, but Rypien will be directly behind Browning as the offense now follows under his direction.
Bengals updated quarterback depth chart
- Jake Browning
- Brett Rypien
- Mike White (practice squad)
- Sean Clifford (practice squad)
The Bengals normally just keep one extra arm on the practice squad when Burrow is healthy, but having two is good insurance in case more injuries stack up at the position. It also gives White and Clifford a chance to compete for the third spot in case something happens to either Browning or Rypien and another is needed to be elevated.
Rypien can also be pushed off the 53 if either White or Clifford impress during practice. It makes sense for the guy who’s been on the team longer to get the first chance, but the situation should naturally be fluid.
Joining the two new QBs on the practice squad is wide receiver Kendric Pryor, who was waived by the club during final cuts. Pryor has spent most of the last two seasons on Cincinnati’s practice squad, and was unsigned for the last few weeks since being waived.
