Former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan has already made a crucial addition to his staff with the Tennessee Titans, and it adds as a blessing for his old club.
Callahan has landed on Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson as his new defensive coordinator, per Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz.
Wilson was with the Ravens for just the 2023 season but has been coaching defensive backs for nearly a decade. A handful of teams were in on making him their new defensive play-caller. The news also comes within 12 hours of the Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald taking the head coaching job with the Seattle Seahawks.
Macdonald leaving the AFC North was big news on its own. One of his former top assistants doing the same only depletes the Ravens more. Wilson was directly working with All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton, NFL interceptions leader Geno Stone, and the rest of the Ravens secondary that figured out how to put a cap on the Bengals' offense.
Baltimore's impressive 2023 season clearly made an impression on the NFL as a whole, but Callahan saw firsthand how difficult the Ravens' defense made life for him as an OC. It's no surprise he'd want his own defense to resemble what he worked so hard to overcome.
Unfortunately for the Bengals, Callahan and Wilson will be coaching against them sometime during the 2024 season. That matchup will surely be a chess match to watch.
