The biggest story in the NFL this week revolves around Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and how his injured right ankle will hold up on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship game.
Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the Chiefs' win against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round of the playoffs last week.
The former NFL MVP has practiced this week and he's expected to play on Sunday, but it's unclear how effective he'll be.
Will Mahomes be able to provide his normal "Mahomes magic"? Or will Cincinnati get the mortal version of Mahomes that doesn't have his same on-field superpowers?
We won't know the answer to that question until Sunday when the Bengals and the Chiefs take the field at Arrowhead (Burrowhead?) Stadium.
Cincy head coach Zac Taylor, however, isn't thinking about which version the Bengals will see on Sunday.
Instead, he's assuming Cincinnati will see vintage Mahomes on Sunday, superpowers and all.
"We're assuming we're getting the best Patrick Mamones," said Taylor on Friday.
This is certainly the best approach — prepare for the best version of Mahomes and if he's less than that, then the Bengals can adjust their plan.
The last thing the Bengals want to do is assume that Mahomes won't be able to do normal Mahomes things because of his ankle injury.
We already know that Mahome is a rare talent. While a lot of quarterbacks wouldn't even try to play this week, Mahomes is not only going to play, but he's going to do everything he can to have zero limits to what he can do.
The good news for Cincy is that if Mahomes comes out playing like classic Mahomes, no one on the Bengals' sideline will be caught off guard.
