43 receiving yards is all Ja'Marr Chase needed Sunday to break his own Bengals record for most in a season. He got to 39 by the end of the first quarter.
The record-breaker was inevitable the next time the ball touched his hands, but Chase only needed one hand to put his old record behind him.
Joe Burrow found Chase early in the second quarter right as the soon-to-be All-Pro turned back to the ball and snagged it with his right hand. He also broke the first would-be tackler in classic Chase style and turned what could've been a seven-yard gain into an 11-yard gain.
Of all the plays Chase could've gotten the record, this play felt perfect for the kind of player he is. His best traits were able to shine in a special moment.
Chase's day wasn't done, of course. He ended up with six receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown, his 16th of the season, and crossed the 1,500 yard mark in the process. He's now at 108 receptions, 1,510 yards, and 16 touchdowns with two games remaining in the regular season.
Chase becomes the first Bengals receiver to reach 1,500 yards in a season. Chad Johnson and A.J. Green couldn't do it throughout their entire Ring of Honor-caliber careers. Chase did it before his 25th birthday, and he only needed 15 games to do it. That matters when the 17-game schedule has only been around since his rookie year back in 2021.
"It feels good," Chase said of breaking his record. "You know, something I wanted to do, just me being me being competitive. I want to compete with myself, so it was a good thing I did that. It was a goal of mine."
Chase is now four receptions from tying T.J. Houshmanzadeh's single-season Bengals record of 112 from 2007. He needs one touchdown to tie Carl Pickens' record of 17 from 1995. There's a very real chance he breaks both this Saturday against the Denver Broncos in game #16.
No matter how this Bengals season ends, Chase's year will go down in history for both the franchise and the entire NFL.
