Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow wasn't making an excuse on Wednesday. He was simply answering a question from a reporter.
But Burrow's answer provided some insight into how the calf injury he sustained in late July is continuing to impact his play.
And it's not just impacting his mobility.
Burrow admitted that the calf injury has altered how he throws the football with velocity, which is likely what has caused some of the superstar quarterback's misses in the passing game.
"When it (injury) first happened, you take a little time off throwing because I didn't want to really get in bad habits," explained Burrow. "It's something that I've had to think about. Trying to find ways to get velocity on it — maybe without putting as much pressure on that calf. As it gets healthier, I'll be able to kind of change that. But right now, I'm feeling my way through it."
Burrow has tried to dismiss how much the calf injury has impacted his play this season, but it's clear that it's affecting him in multiple ways. He's nowhere close to the Joe Burrow that we've seen deliver countless times in big moments.
There's no doubt that Burrow is an elite competitor. I'm not sure you could keep him off the field right now even if his calf was missing. He'd still find a way to gut it out for 60 minutes.
