Joe Burrow makes it clear how he feels about Myles Garrett’s shot at NFL history in upcoming Bengals vs. Browns showdown
Bengals QB Joe Burrow is aware of the history at stake.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has broken his share of records. One more game with 300 passing yards and he’ll be new franchise leader in that category as well.
He’ll more than likely be involved in another record Sunday, but not one that he’ll break.
Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, sitting on 22 sacks for the year, needs one full sack to break the all-time single-season record of 22.5. It would be another bullet point in Garrett’s inevitable first-ballot Hall of Fame case, and there’s likely nothing the Bengals’ upcoming opponent wants more as a team than to see it happen.
It would be everything for Garrett and Cleveland fans. It would be just another sack for Burrow.
Joe Burrow addresses being linked to potential NFL history
Burrow’s about to wrap up his sixth season in the NFL and 77th-career regular season game. He’s been taken down plenty more than that number, 211 to be exact.
Garrett has accounted for 11.5 of those sacks. No other player has more than 5.5.
When asked about the thought of Garrett sacking him for the single-season crown, Burrow gave the honest truth during his weekly presser.
“He’s got me a lot.”
A full-season’s worth for most quality edge rushers at that.
Garrett’s first All-Pro season was also Burrow’s rookie year. The two have gone against each other a total of nine games. Look no further for a scouting report on the game’s best pass rusher than the QB who plays on the other side of the state.
“He’s more athletic than everybody else on the field,” Burrow said of Garrett. “He is bigger, stronger than everybody else. He has a mindset that he’s not too high or too low at any point. For a defensive lineman, I think he’s probably got a unique mindset as far as that position goes, but it’s one that you can appreciate. He’s a guy that I’ve kind of gotten to know over the years, and I like him as a person, and he takes his job very seriously, and I just have a lot of respect for him.”
There’s respect, and then there’s doing him a solid by taking a sack that’s unnecessary to take. Burrow made it clear he will not hand Garrett the record, nor will he work extra hard to prevent the record from happening at his expense.
“I’m certainly not going to overcompensate either way,” Burrow said. “I’m not going to go out of my way to not let him get the record, and I’m not going to go out of my way to let him get the record either. I’m gonna go and play football. There’s going to be situations that a sack is the best of the bad outcomes of that play, and maybe I take one, and there’s gonna be other situations that I’m about to get sacked and I need to throw it away in that situation.
“It’s such a situational game that I don’t think you can go in thinking one way or the other. Every play is so different.”
Garrett will have four quarters to make history. If the Burrow and the Bengals prevent it from happening entirely, it may be a great day on the scoreboard for Cincinnati in its last home game of the season.
