The Cincinnati Bengals placed tight end Drew Sample on Injured Reserve on Monday after he suffered a knee injury in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. The fourth-year player is set to miss the next four games at minimum with the roster move.
Sample had surgery last week so the move is not a surprise.
The transaction also means the Bengals are in for additional roster moves in the near future.
As Andre Perrota pointed out in the tweet below, Cincinnati's roster currently sits at 51 players. Before you get excited about the front office making a season-altering signing in free agency, note that the team is likelier to bring back players from IR.
Among those, rookie Cam Taylor-Britt is an option. The cornerback had himself a solid preseason and has been hard at work to get back on the playing field. Getting the second-round pick back on the roster could go a long way for an already-deep secondary.
Other candidates to be designated to return include defensive end Khalid Kareem and offensive tackle Isaiah Prince.
The Bengals won't be forced to make any tough decisions as the NFL will often make them for you with the way injuries work. Expect roster moves over the next couple of days as the team readies itself for a huge AFC clash against the Baltimore Ravens.
