Joe Burrow survived a lot of hits during the 2021-22 postseason. He nearly led the Cincinnati Bengals to their first Super Bowl despite being sacked 19 times in their four playoff games, including their 23-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI.

Burrow not only came away up just short of glory, but the 19 sacks he took throughout the postseason, including seven from the Super Bowl, became an NFL record.

That record has fallen thanks to another NFC West team defeating a second-year AFC quarterback in a Super Bowl that was played in California.

Drake Maye passes Joe Burrow as most-sacked QB in a single postseason

New England Patriots QB Drake Maye entered Super Bowl LX having taken 15 sacks throughout the playoffs to get there. The Seattle Seahawks made sure he was sacked more Sunday night than any of Maye’s three previous postseason starts.

After taking the fifth of six sacks on the evening, Maye passed Burrow on the infamous sack leaderboard and now holds the record with 21.

16 of Burrow’s 19 sacks from his first playoff run came in two games. He was taken down nine times in the Divisional Round against the Tennessee Titans, and the aforementioned seven from the Super Bowl loss. Maye’s distribution of sacks was as equal as it could’ve been with five sacks from each of the first three games, and he was sacked another five times plus one more in his Super Bowl defeat.

Maye was fighting for his life for four quarters against Seattle’s impressive defense with head coach Mike Macdonald calling the plays and former Bengals linebacker Josh Bynes coaching the linebackers. Defensive end Derrick Hall and defensive tackle Byron Murphy II each got Maye twice, and cornerback Devon Witherspoon and DT Rylie Mills got him once.

Burrow’s unfortunate record only stood for four years before Maye broke it. Both will look to get back at a chance for a ring next season, and to never come close to setting a new record for postseason sacks taken ever again.
