One of the Cincinnati Bengals' top off-season tasks that appeared to be taken care of over the weekend is apparently still up in the air.
On Sunday morning, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that Cincinnati gave quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher a contract extension last week.
Sources say Dan Pitcher, the Bengals quarterbacks coach since 2020, received a lucrative contract extension within the past week after several teams wanted to speak with him about offensive coordinator openings. Cincinnati was proactive, attempting to lock Pitcher in for another season rather than have him leave for a coordinator opening.
Sounds good, right? Pitcher is an important assistant coach for the Bengals — especially since he's the only quarterbacks coach Joe Burrow has had in the NFL.
The only problem is that it's still possible that Pitcher leaves this off-season.
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor indicated to reporters on Monday that there's still interest from other teams in Pitcher as a coordinator.
Taylor also noted that he would love to have Pitcher back in 2023.
I think it's pretty obvious what's happening here. Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan is receiving interest as a head coach from the Indianapolis Colts and the Arizona Cardinals.
If Callahan leaves, I'm betting that Pitcher slides into the offensive coordinator role.
But if Callahan stays, then maybe Pitcher pursues offensive coordinator opportunities.
This can be viewed as good news and bad news.
It likely means that Cincinnati's exact offensive staff won't return in 2023. That's not ideal, but it's something that nearly every NFL team will deal with this off-season.
The good news for the Bengals is that they won't be looking for an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach this offseason. They already have replacements in place (if they choose).
If Callahan leaves, then Pitcher likely gets promoted to offensive coordinator and assistant wide receivers coach Brad Kragthorpe steps into the quarterbacks coach role (Kragthorpe worked with Burrow at LSU in 2018 and in Cincinnati in 2020).
The other scenario would be Callahan staying and Pitcher leaving. If that happens, then Kragthorphe could still simply be promoted to quarterbacks coach.
Essentially, the Bengals will almost certainly have either Callahan or Pitcher on staff next season, but they likely won't have both.
Fortunately for Cincy, it shouldn't hurt continuity too much since they can just promote from within.
