There was once a time when Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow took college football by storm. It's what Texas is hoping Arch Manning, the nephew of both Eli and Peyton Manning, does for the Longhorns this upcoming season.
Manning is entering his first year as UT's starting QB. The former No. 1 overall recruit in the country has bided his time behind Quinn Ewers the last two years, but is now preparing to take over the program.
That preparation includes looking at Burrow's past tape.
Arch Manning shouts out Joe Burrow, Josh Allen
Manning has his two uncles to emulate his game, but outside of the famous Mannings, young Arch looks to Cincinnati's MVP-caliber passer and the reigning NFL MVP.
"I'm watching a lot of Josh Allen and Joe Burrow right now. Those are my guys," Manning said last week at the Manning Passing Academy. "Because they're dogs. I'm watching some of their college film right now. Just good players, elite competitors, and fun to watch."
Burrow's college tape from his 2019 season at LSU got him drafted first overall by the Bengals in 2020, a fate Manning is on track to achieving six years later should he declare following his junior season. Burrow is most well-known for that 2019 campaign in which he won both the Heisman Trophy and National Championship, but it was actually his second year starting for the Tigers. Manning could stay in Austin and start for two years as well if he chooses.
Allen was drafted two years prior to Burrow and six picks lower in his draft class, but both seemed to round into elite QBs at about the same time. He was named MVP after the 2024 season in which he led the Buffalo Bills to a 13-4 record and a fifth-consecutive AFC East title.
Manning will be one of the quintessential stars of college football this season, and what he does on the field will be directly inspired by Cincinnati and Buffalo's signal-callers of today.
