Zac Taylor gives a necessary update on the most pressing decision the Bengals face right now
Cincinnati has a decision to make at the most important position.
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor would not commit to Jake Browning starting at quarterback this week against the Green Bay Packers.
“We’ll see where it goes,” Taylor told reporters during his Monday press conference. “Like all personnel decisions, we’ve got to evaluate it. Jake’s been very accountable for how the game went for him. I’ve got to be accountable for how the game went for me as well. We’ll continue to progress here through the days.”
The door is indeed open for a switch under center, and a decision should come very soon.
Zac Taylor will make decision on Jake Browning in the coming days
The decision to bench Browning, who’s started the last three games after Joe Burrow’s turf toe injury, needs to happen soon if it’s going to happen at all this week. Cincinnati’s game in Green Bay is on Sunday, six days from this posting.
Taylor affirmed a decision will take place before Wednesday’s practice.
Browning finished Week 5’s game against the Detroit Lions with 251 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. All three touchdowns came after the three interceptions, and the Lions were up 28-3 before Cincinnati’s QB started finding his receivers in the end zone.
Taylor could’ve benched Browning after INT No. 3 and no one would’ve blinked an eye. Brett Rypien would’ve entered the game as the only other active passer on the roster. Sean Clifford and Mike White are on the club’s practice squad.
If the Bengals do make a switch at QB this week, it would likely be Rypien who gets the next chance, or one of the two practice squad guys. It’s unlikely the team is going to complete a trade for a backup like Russell Wilson or Jameis Winston in the next day and immediately insert him as the starter when practice kicks back up on Wednesday.
Unlikely, but not impossible.
Whatever happens, there will be clarity when Wednesday afternoon rolls around in Cincinnati.
