Day 1 of NFL Free Agency was a wild one around one of the most unexpected positions.
There were plenty of veteran running backs on the free agent market and plenty have already received pay days higher than expected. With the running back signings, a couple of new players were pushed out which was not expected.
Green Bay Packers released RB Aaron Jones and RB Joe Mixon was let go by the Cincinnati Bengals. Two players that now sit on the free agent market and are players that Cleveland should be checking in on at least.
I believe that Derrick Henry is out of the realm of possibility for the Browns, he is just going to command too much money. Either one of Jones or Mixon would better fit as a compliment to Nick Chubb when he is back healthy for the cost.
Jones has been the better, more productive back as of late but would not take a pay cut for the Packers to add Josh Jacobs. If I’m leaning toward the Browns adding either, I would lean toward Mixon being the more likely option. What a story that would be for him to make the trip to Cleveland from Cincinnati.
Mixon finished his seventh season with the Bengals in 2023 and it was his fourth time crossing 1,000 yards. He’s still carrying the ball at four yards per tote but has noticeably lost some of his burst. Still, he’s a solid back who is going to sign a one-year deal likely.
Cleveland hopes Chubb can be who he has always been when he comes back, but they have to have Insurance behind him. Mixon or Jones would offer that and the recently released Mixon just may want to get back at the Bengals twice a season.
Browns set to replace team captain for their defense in free agency via longtime NFC starter
An addition for the Browns.
