Ahead of Super Bowl 59 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers stole some of the spotlight. News broke that Rodgers will be released by the Jets ahead of the new league year and will become a free agent.
The Cleveland Browns are in the group of teams that need a quarterback and they are in a spot where a veteran could make some sense. Rodgers is going to sign a one-year contract wherever he goes.
If Cleveland wants to make disgruntled DE Myles Garrett rescind his trade offer, they need to make him believe that they can win. Rodgers would offer a capable presence at QB that would likely play rather well in a Kevin Stefanski system, which has favored QBs of Rodgers’ type.
Having Rodgers under center, or another veteran, would allow a rookie quarterback to sit and develop. Even if the Browns were to sign a veteran, they could still take someone like Sheduer Sanders at No. 2 overall in the draft to mold into their franchise quarterback. In fact, that would be the most ideal solution to exiting the Watson contract.
Rodgers, 41, threw 28 touchdowns to 11 interceptions with 3,897 passing yards to his credit in 17 games during the 2024 season. The former MVP is on the decline but would still offer the Browns better QB play than they have as of late. Rodgers could be the placeholder that would allow the Browns to at least be capable and win some games.
Of course, the Browns would need their drafted quarterback to work out for this to fully become a success. However, the best path to winning in 2025 is a veteran QB over a rookie. Garrett wants to win and the Browns hold leverage to whether he is on the team or not. It seems like an easy decision to bring in a veteran. Whether Rodgers would have interest in Cleveland and the Browns would have interest in him is yet to be seen.
Once Rodgers is released, expect the Browns to be a team mentioned that could at least make some sense for the longtime great. When the time comes, it may be the move they need to make this off-season.
