The big news out of Cleveland, as the Browns begin mandatory minicamp, is all about wide receiver Amari Cooper.
Cooper was not at practice on Tuesday as the Browns opened camp and is expected to be holding out. Cleveland’s star wideout is in the final year of his five-year deal that he signed with the Dallas Cowboys before being traded to the Browns.
All signs point toward the Browns and Cooper reaching a new deal before the season simply because he is a huge part of what the Browns do.
On Tuesday, Browns QB Deshaun Watson gave a rave review of where Watson stacks up compared to the top wide receivers in the league.
“He’s the best in the game, and I believe that,” said Watson. “He shows it each and every year. He showed it the last two years with different quarterbacks. So, I think you got to put him up there, if not the best.”
Cleveland had five different quarterbacks start a game last season on their way to 11 wins. Despite catching passes from so many quarterbacks, Cooper had 1,250 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
In Week 16 last season, Cooper went off for a career day against the Houston Texans when he put up 265 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns on 11 catches. Joe Flacco was his quarterback in that game.
“There’s no limit. There’s no sky for us. We can be as good as we want to be, and that’s going to start with the work, it’s going to start with the attention to details and going out there and executing in each and every game.”
Through OTAs, Cooper and Watson have not been able to work on that chemistry due to Cooper being a no-show. Building that connection year in and year out is important and the Browns will need them both on the field in training camp. Not having Cooper on the field during mandatory minicamp not ideal but it is not the end of the world.
Cooper is Cleveland’s top pass-catching option and the most proven in the room. The Browns can’t afford to go into 2024 without him on the field, so both sides will surely work something out soon. In the meantime, his quarterback is still hyping him up.

Not an ideal development.
