Browns GM Andrew Berry clears up common misconception many have on the outlook of Cleveland with where they are headed
The Browns are going to be young, but Andrew Berry wants folks to know it doesn’t mean they’re going to be bad.
The Cleveland Browns are heading in a new direction after the Kevin Stefanski era and there’s going to be a ton of roster turnover in the coming months.
Cleveland was considerably young on defense last season outside of a couple of veterans. The Browns are going to get a whole lot younger on the offensive side of the football in March when free agency begins with all five of their starters from last year set to be free agents.
Last season the Browns went 5-12 in what was Stefanski’s last year as the head coach. Just because the Browns are about to get younger, GM Andrew Berry pointed out it doesn’t mean losing is on the way.
Browns’ Andrew Berry sets the record straight on the direction Cleveland is heading
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that youth equals lack of performance,” Berry stated on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “ Two of the three youngest teams this past year were Philadelphia and Green Bay. I think we’re a little unique in the NFL where it’s not like baseball where a prospect has to be at a farm system before they hit the big league level.”
There’s certainly an adjustment period for young players, but we want to have high expectations for guys who come into our program. To be role players, to ascend into starters, and I think we saw that this past year with that draft class.”
Cleveland appears to have hit on players like LB Carson Schwesinger, RB Quinshon Judkins, TE Harold Fannin Jr., and DT Mason Graham. Additional players like RB Dylan Sampson and QB Dillon Gabriel played for the Browns last season too.
The Browns are getting younger and looking to open another window around DE Myles Garrett. With two first-round picks coming in April, Cleveland has a chance to really speed up their rebuild process. It’s overwhelmingly expected the Browns spend both of those first-round picks on the offensive side.
Cleveland was just in the playoffs in 2023 before falling flat on their face in 2024. The Browns took a slight step forward record-wise in 2025, and 2026 has to be the year they take another clear step toward competing.
