Cleveland is heading to the college ranks to add an offensive assistant to the staff.

Former Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will reportedly join the Browns as a tight ends coach. According to The Athletic’s Zac Jackson, Rees will have a part in developing the passing game led by Deshaun Watson.

Some may recognize Rees from his time as the quarterback at Notre Dame from 2010-13. Then he was briefly with the Washington Commanders back in 2014. The former college quarterback got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at Northwestern in 2015.

Rees does have a little bit of experience as an assistant in the NFL. He was an offensive assistant with the Chargers organization in 2016.

In 2017, Rees went back to Notre Dame to coach quarterbacks. He held the offensive coordinator job from 2020-2022 before going to Alabama.

At Alabama, Rees did work with Jalen Milroe as his quarterback and the mobile QB improved as the season went on under his coaching. An interesting wrinkle about his resume for last year

Rees takes over for T.C. McCartney and now gets a chance to coach David Njoku coming off of a career year where he earned a Pro Bowl nod.

Expect other coaching moves on the offensive side of the ball. Rees is one piece to the puzzle but the Browns still need an offensive coordinator and a running backs coach.
