Coming into Week 16, Cleveland Browns WR Amari Cooper needed just 15 yards to break a pretty embarrassing trend for the browns.
Cleveland has never had a receiver have 1,000 yards receiving in back-to-back seasons. With two games remaining in the season, Cooper sits over that number once again. On the first play of the game against the Texans, Cooper caught a 53 yard pass from Joe Flacco.
Last season, Cooper had 1,160 receiving yards and that was the second-highest total in his career. The Pro Bowl-level receiver now has crossed the 1,000-yard mark seven times in his nine-year career.
It’s even more impressive how Cooper has gotten it done. Last season, he was a great target for backup QB Jacoby Brissett when he had to start 11 games while Deshaun Watson served his suspension. This year, Cooper has performed with four different quarterbacks.
A good wide receiver finds a way to get it done with whoever is at quarterback. Of course, a good quarterback makes their job a lot easier, but the good ones can get it done with mediocre play behind center.
It was a steal when Cleveland got Cooper from Dallas for just a fifth-round pick and it looks like an even bigger steal now. Cooper is under contract in Cleveland for the 2024 season, so getting some kind of extension done is possible between now and then.
Week 16 was a monster game from Cooper, who had 265 receiving yards on 11 catches. Cleveland’s wideout had a pair of touchdowns, as well.
All in all, the Browns are probably glad they have their first receiver who has gone back-to-back with 1,000-yard seasons. Though they’ve had some talented ones, they’ve never been able to put it together in back-to-back seasons for various reasons.
