With Mike Vrabel having spent a season with the Cleveland Browns, there was always going to be a risk he would poach an assistant or two at his next head coaching job.

Vrabel was recently hired to lead the New England Patriots and one of his first tasks is assembling his staff for the 2025 season.

The former Tennessee Titans head coach is taking one of Cleveland’s offensive assistants with him to work next to QB Drake Maye.

Ashton Grant has taken the job to be the quarterbacks coach with the Patriots. Grant was Cleveland’s assistant quarterbacks coach in 2024 and held that role for two seasons. Grant joined the Browns in 2020 when Kevin Stefanski first came to Cleveland and has worked his way up.

Grant was an offensive assistant when he first started with the Browns, then was promoted to being an offensive quality control coach in 2022.

Cleveland has not had a quarterbacks coach under Stefanski, instead the offensive coordinators have held that duty. Grant getting the chance to be a position coach with quarterbacks now takes place with the Patriots, who have a very intriguing guy under center in Maye.

It is not yet known whether or not the Browns will hire a quarterbacks coach this season. There is a possibility that new OC Tommy Rees just takes on that role since Stefanski will be calling plays. Rees replaced Ken Dorsey, who the Browns opted to move on from after one season in his role as OC.

Grant should be seen as an up-and-coming coach in the NFL who eventually is going to be a coordinator before we know it. After multiple seasons with the Browns, he has received a deserved promotion with the Patriots.
