After a 1-5 start to the NFL season, the Cleveland Browns just made a move that told us everything we needed to know. They don’t believe they’ll be competing this year after a tough start.
Cleveland is sending wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 2025. Additionally, the teams will swap sixth and seventh-round selections.
For Cooper and the Browns, this is an unfortunate ending after two really good seasons in 2022 and 2023. Cooper had 1,160 yards in 2022 and then posted a career-high of 1,250 yards in 2023. However, this season was off to a very poor start for Cooper. The struggling passing attack with Deshaun Watson has not been able to pair up with Cooper.
So far this season, Cooper has 250 yards and two touchdowns. The Pro Bowl wide receiver has caught just 24 of 53 targets and has been labeled to have nine drops.
Cleveland getting a third-round pick back for a player who was not scheduled to be with the team after this season is a win. It visibly was not working out on the field and the Browns losing has pushed them into being sellers at the trade deadline.
After the trade, Jerry Jeudy is Joe the top option for Cleveland. This will be an opportunity for him to carry a heavier workload and make the most of it. Elijah Moore and Cedric Tillman will be the next up in the room. Cleveland will want to get rookie Jamari Thrash a look at some point this season as well.
While it wasn’t expected to happen like this, poor play from the Browns and an underperforming Cooper in Cleveland made this deal come together. It is one that makes the most sense for all involved.
Browns can’t mishandle Nick Chubb’s return just because an unfortunate injury popped up elsewhere
The Browns have to do this the right way.
