Yesterday marked a big happening for the Cleveland Browns without any actual football being played.
Both head coach Kelvin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry were handed contract extensions. Entering their fifth year with the Browns, they’ll be around for at least the foreseeable future.
Cleveland has struggled to find stability at either position for years until these two came along. For Stefanski, he is the first head coach in the new era to coach into his fifth season. The last coach to be with the Browns for at least five seasons was Bill Belichick from 1991-95.
“I think for Andrew (Berry) and I, you know, it’s a partnership where we take our job seriously,” Stefanski said on Wednesday following news breaking that he had received an extension. “We really, you know, we understand the jobs we have in this town. We understand our fans and what they want this team to be. So, we’re just going to focus on working, every waking minute to get this thing where we want it. But I just come back to this, for the organization to trust Andrew and I speaks to what we’ve been able to do, but we have plenty of work to do. Fortunately for us, we’ve got some great people in this building, coaches, players, staff. So, we’ll just continue to work.”
Stefanski and Berry are 38-32 overall since taking over the Browns in 2020. The team has made two playoff appearances in the four seasons and won their first playoff game in nearly three decades as well. Stefanski was Coach of the Year in the NFL last season for leading the Browns to the playoffs despite all of the injuries that piled up. He won the award in 2020 as well.
The extensions signal different times in Cleveland because the team is winning and coaches and general managers just don’t get extended by the Browns. It has never worked out in the past almost three decades for the Browns.
Still, the Browns are building toward trying to win a Super Bowl just like the other teams around the NFL. That is something that has never happened in Cleveland. Berry has done a great job of putting a roster together with an elite defense that is ready to compete. Now, it is all about taking a step forward with the defense while catching up on offense. Cleveland has one of the better rosters in the NFL and that is a testament to the last five years.
“Of course, I mean, we have work to do. Until you’ve got that final one checked off, you haven’t done it. And that’s for us. As you know, there’s one goal for every football team, every franchise, and that’s where we will keep our sights,” Stefanski explained. “Obviously, in between, you try to win some ball games and do right by the community and those types of things. But we and every – all 32 clubs, we have one thing in mind.” “Of course, I mean, we have work to do. Until you’ve got that final one checked off, you haven’t done it. And that’s for us.
