Cleveland Browns received good news for their defense a few days before they start preparing for their Week 1 opponent, the Cincinnati Bengals.

Defensive end Alex Wright returned to practice for the first time since he was injured during the team’s first preseason game against the New York Giants back on Aug. 3.

In that game, Wright suffered a knee injury that resulted in him getting arthroscopic surgery. To be able to return to practice this early is good news for the Browns and a surprise to most of us.

Wright was thought to be a player who could be heading to the injured reserve along with linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk, who was officially placed on the list today. Without Wright having to go to the IR, it bodes well for the defensive line depth.

At this time there is no work on whether or not Wright would be ready for Week 1 action on Sept. 10. He is a second-year player that has been out for almost a month, so it would not be a surprise if he wasn’t able to suit up. But being able to get Wright acclimated into practice again is a great step.

As a rookie, Wright didn’t record a sack in 17 games, and that included five starts. The hope is that Wright is able to take a big step forward with a year under his belt. Cleveland won’t need Wright to be anymore than a rotational pass rusher behind Myles Garrett, Za’Darius Smith, and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo.

Good news for the Browns as they are close to wrapping up their week before a couple of days off.
