Over the weekend, the Cleveland Browns went into the 2025 NFL Draft with a need for a rookie quarterback to develop. It was thought that the Browns would take one early, but they came away with two, and neither was taken early on.
Cleveland made a surprise draft pick on Day 2 by taking Dillon Gabriel out of Oregon. On Day 3, they made perhaps the biggest surprise of the draft finally come to a halt, and that was Shedeur Sanders slipping down the draft board.
The Browns got Sanders with the No. 144 pick in the fifth round and found great value for that part of the draft. In his first bit of media availability, the new Browns quarterback revealed what his dad told him after slipping down from where he thought he would be drafted.
“He said, ‘God got us.’ So that’s what it is. I look at what went on and everything as a football game, you know, you may not come out early hot, you know, that may not happen,” Sanders stated. “But you know, when it’s down to the final two minutes of the game, then you understand the level of seriousness raises the stakes. All the stakes raised and that’s why I thrive in those high-pressure moments. So I never felt any type of way, I never felt any type of way. I understood, ‘okay, this is the route’ and that’s it.”
Sanders was always a possibility for the Browns but it was thought that they would have to use a first or second-round pick to make it happen. That wasn’t the case and the Browns couldn’t pass up the value there in the fifth round.
Cleveland now has a crowded quarterback room with youth and a bit of veteran presence. Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett have the experience joining Gabriel and Sanders as newcomers. The Browns will give all four quarterbacks the chance to compete for the job in training camp.
Going into the draft, the Browns had 10 selections. Cleveland ended up making seven picks total and two were spent on quarterbacks. The hope for Cleveland is that they hit on one of them. After falling down the draft board, Sanders would be a great find if he works out in Cleveland.
