The Cleveland Browns surprised many when they took Dillon Gabriel out of Oregon in the third round of the draft. The Browns again made a big surprise on Day 3 that no one had coming.
Following an unprecedented slide by Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, the Browns felt comfortable adding him to their team in the fifth round at No. 144 overall.
The majority of draft analysts had Sanders as the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback in the quarterback rankings for this draft. Following the surprise selection, one member of the Cleveland Browns already seems excited about it. Pro Bowl CB Denzel Ward took to X to fire off how he felt.
“Time to be legendary! Let’s do it!”
Browns now have four quarterbacks healthy and Deshaun Watson who likely won’t play during the 2025 season. Sanders will get a chance to step in and compete with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Gabriel as well. Cleveland took a beating at the position last year and now is throwing multiple darts at the board trying to fix it.
The best-case scenario for the Browns is that one of Gabriel or Sanders can be the guy for them. This was a big swing for Andrew Berry and the Browns, though it wasn’t a costly one. Getting Sanders in the fifth is terrific value, it just raises questions about Gabriel being picked as a reach earlier.
Cleveland liked Sanders through the process and he fits what Stefanski wants in a quarterback. Sanders is accurate, on time, and is football smart. The Browns now have quite a different-looking quarterback room. Sanders was the final scheduled pick for Cleveland in the draft after trading their sixth rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles to move up.
