Heading into Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens in a game that the Browns were handed a 28-3 loss, it was thought that Deshaun Watson would be good to give it a go.
Watson was ruled out just before the game with the shoulder injury that we now know he was medically cleared to play with. Not that it was the wrong choice, because if he couldn’t give it his best then that’s enough to justify sitting out.
“Yes (he was cleared),” Stefanski said on Monday. And let me say this I mean, he knows his body. He’s played through serious pain before (with) very, very serious injuries. It wasn’t a matter of pain tolerance or anything. He just did not feel like he had his full faculties.”
Rookie fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson got his first career start and it did not go well. The rookie threw three interceptions on the Browns’ way to the lopsided loss.
Watson did not throw towards the end of the week but was expected to give it a go. He said on Friday that he would give it a go.
“Well, we listed him as questionable. He didn’t throw all week and we had to get to the game, and that was the first time he was going to throw to see ultimately how he felt if he felt like he could drive a throw, those type of things. So he was confident in it. Like I told you guys, he’s disappointed, but I wouldn’t make it any more than that.”
Watson is expected to play against the San Francisco 49ers in two weeks following the bye week.
“I know Deshaun, obviously, we talked with the doctors, structurally we feel good about it,” Stefanski explained. “He’s going to use this week to rest and continue to get treatment. But, yeah, I feel like medically we’re all on the same page.”
Many were not a fan of an early bye week that occurs in Week 5 for the Browns. Now it is very welcomed with multiple players needing a rest including Watson.
