We are now a couple of days away from the 2025 NFL Draft and the dust has settled.
The Cleveland Browns were scheduled to make 10 picks but made two trades during the draft and ended up making seven selections. Cleveland filled various needs and they surprised by taking both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders at the quarterback position.
You can’t address every position in the draft and that’s the unfortunate reality for Cleveland. The Browns failed to address a few areas of their roster. I came away from this draft with a few thoughts.
After ignoring the wide receiver position in the NFL draft, the Browns now have to sign one
Going into the draft, it was thought that the Browns would add Travis Hunter and he would bring them big help at the wideout position. Cleveland made the trade and added a good player but they went on to ignore receiver for the rest of the draft. Not taking Dillon Gabriel and taking a wideout late in the third would have made sense.
Jerry Jeudy showed his best season yet last year by breaking 1,000 yards. Past him, the Browns don’t have a lot of proven talent. Cedric Tillman has shown flashes but missed six games last year with a concussion. Elijah Moore remains a free agent and could be an option, it is one that makes sense as a veteran.
Jamari Thrash, Mike Woods II, and David Bell have done minimal as a third to fourth option. The Browns are going to have to add a wideout in free agency still, or it’s going to be a bad unit.
Will Cleveland bring Nick Chubb back?
Cleveland went into the draft with just Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr. on the roster. The Browns opted to double down and take two running backs in the draft and it makes sense because they want to improve the run game in a big way. Last year was a tough year running the ball and the Browns haven’t had the run game they are used to under Kevin Stefanski since Chubb was healthy.
Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson give the Browns a powerful punch at running back as a duo and the Browns now have a decision to make. Do they want to go with Jerome Ford or Nick Chubb as the other option? Ford is due $3.4 million this season and the Browns could look to save money there. Riding with Chubb as a depth option is still on the table but it will come down to the decision on Ford.
Can Dawand Jones be the consistent left tackle?
Cleveland not taking an offensive tackle was another move that made you go back to the Gabriel pick. The Browns drafted a better quarterback in the fifth round with Shedeur Sanders than they did when they reached in the third round. That third-round pick could have been spent on an offensive tackle and helped the Browns out.
It appears the Browns hope to role with Jones as their left tackle but he has missed 13 games over his first two seasons. Jack Conklin has consistently missed time on the right side at tackle in Cleveland. Cornelius Lucas and Tevin Jenkins will be leaned on as depth, though the Browns would have been wise to have a rookie in there to develop for the future.
