The 2025 NFL Draft just wrapped up a couple of days ago and the Cleveland Browns are set to welcome seven rookies to their team.
Cleveland went into the draft with 10 picks but only ended up making seven after agreeing to two trades between the three days. With that being said, the Browns were not able to address every single area of need.
Now that the draft is over, the Browns are already back working the free agency market. Cleveland visited with a former Pro Bowl wideout who has been well-traveled recently to start the week, and now they are set to sign him.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson to sign with the Cleveland Browns
According to the NFL’s transaction wire, the Browns hosted veteran WR Diontae Johnson for a visit. Shortly after, news broke via Mike Garafalo that the Browns would be signing Johnson. It will be a one-year deal for the veteran wideout. Johnson had a strong start to the first five years of his career with the Steelers before bouncing between three teams during the 2024 NFL season.
Cleveland didn’t take a wideout in the draft and Cedric Tillman is currently the No. 2 option to Jerry Jeudy on the roster. Bringing in a veteran wide receiver was a must for the Browns and they are acted quickly on it.
At his best, Johnson had 1,161 receiving yards and eight touchdowns with the Steelers in 2021 when he was a Pro Bowler. Johnson caught five touchdowns and 717 receiving yards in 2023 and that was his last strong season in the NFL.
After playing in seven games with the Carolina Panthers last year, Johnson ended up with the Baltimore Ravens for four games. Failing to fit in there as well, Johnson appeared in one final game for the Houston Texans. The locker room fit with Johnson has been questionable during his career and that would be a risk the Browns are taking here.
Johnson is still 28 years old and has 4,738 receiving yards in 77 career games. The talent is there, now the Browns just need everything else to work out.
