The Browns don’t appear like they’ll be in on the top free agent quarterback.

The Cleveland Browns’ biggest question mark to watch play out over the next couple of months will come at the quarterback position.

Cleveland has Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel on its roster. The Browns are widely expected to bring in another name to compete for the starting job in Todd Monken’s first season as head coach.

NFL insider says Browns likely won’t go after top free agent quarterback

Cleveland has been a team brought up for Green Bay Packers QB Malik Willis ahead of him hitting free agency. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, it doesn’t appear Willis will be signing with the Browns.

“Expect at least two and possibly several teams to be involved on Willis. “Miami is definitely in,” a source said,” Via Fowler. “Arizona is combing the market, too, but it doesn’t seem likely that Willis will end up in Cleveland.”

The Browns going with another option at quarterback makes sense. Willis is expected to command potentially $25 million a season, and that’s a sizable risk for a guy who’s started just three games over the past two seasons as Jordan Love’s backup with the Packers.

There’s a lot of projecting going on with the idea of Willis being a franchise quarterback. The former third-round pick didn’t work out with the Tennessee Titans in his first two seasons as a pro, but appears to have found his footing with the Packers and being coached by HC Matt LaFleur. There’s a chance Willis is now a franchise quarterback, but there’s also the risk that a small sample size is giving the wrong picture.

Willis brings dual-threat ability and has a chance to be one of the better running quarterbacks in the NFL. It’s no secret Monken wants a quarterback who can use his legs, and the dual-threat ability would definitely be a fit with the Browns.

Cleveland is already paying a ton of money to Deshaun Watson for what amounted to nothing positive for the franchise. Putting tens of millions of dollars into another quarterback with Watson remaining on the roster would be a questionable move.

Again, the Browns are likely to bring in another quarterback and they should. Don’t expect them to break the bank open for Willis when free agency arrives next week.
