It’s starting to heat up around the NFL as teams are making moves to have cap space to operate next week when free agency begins.
As pointed out by Dianna Russini of The Athletic, several positions are being viewed as possibly being paid less than originally thought. The expectation is that the linebacker, running back, and safety markets could be pretty flooded.
With not enough big deals to go around, we’re going to see more players take one-year deals and that is something that the Browns can take advantage of. It is easier to fit in a salary for just one year, rather than having to plan for it over a stretch of years. The Browns had guys like Za’Darius Smith, Maurice Hurst, Rodney McLeod, and Kareem Hunt on one-year deals or expiring deals last season.
With Nick Chubb’s contract still something that has to be sorted out and him returning from injury, the Browns will be likely to add a running back. It isn’t going to be Josh Jacobs or Saquon Barkley, but the Browns will have a chance to get a pretty good player for an affordable cost due to the number of backs out there and how the position is viewed now.
With McLeod a free agent, a third safety is another thing the Browns can eye. Justin Simmons just hit the market and he’s going to get paid. With several other big names out there like Jamal Adams, Jordan Poyer, and Quandre Diggs the Browns could find themselves getting a middle-tier guy to pair with Grant Delpit and Juan Thornhill. If the Browns hadn’t signed Thornhill last go around, perhaps they’d be in on Simmons.
Linebacker is a position Cleveland hasn't valued in years outside of selecting Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah in the second round a couple of years back. He’s the guy for that unit and a star already, but Cleveland could use some depth with Anthony Walker Jr. and Sione Takitaki as free agents. There will be some affordable deals there for Cleveland.
You have to continue adapting in the NFL to be successful and that includes how you operate in the offseason. Expect the Browns to key in on some positions with one-year deals while they continue drafting and developing.
