Safety Grant Delpit isn't thinking about money.
Well, at least not yet.
The former second-round draft selection in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns is due a contract extension soon. And in familiar fashion, Delpit could be making his need for more money and more security a driving factor in the 2023 season. Instead, Delpit is focused on what he can control, letting everything else play out when it may.
“That’s not on my mind, man. I play this football – I love this game with everything in my heart, man. I want that end game, the end result that we all want in this team more than anything in my soul,” Delpit told reporters. “So that’s all I’m focused on, man. With winning comes great things and that’s what we focus on.”
Ahead of Delpit is an opportunity to build on momentum earned during the 2022 NFL season — his first as a full-time starter. He tallied 105 tackles, the seventh-highest at the safety position in the NFL, and a team-high four interceptions. Yet, he isn't resting. He feels that heading into an important year four, he has more to give the Browns.
"Greatness, man," Delpit said. "Greatness. I haven't showed any to myself. I haven't shown anything yet. Greatness. And that comes from being out here every day, putting in the work. You can't have any excuses when it comes to getting on that field."
And the good news is, contract extension or not, Delpit wants to figure out how to make things work out in Cleveland. He believes in the organization and the comradery they have built. What is left for him to do is prove that he is worth paying, despite the injury history.
“Of course,” Delpit said. “I built a brotherhood with these guys. These guys are my brothers and I expect highly from them, they expect highly from me. And I’ve grown to know these guys and I love them and we’ll go out there and get it done this season.”
The area Delpit believes he can be better is in the turnover creation department. In 2023, he wants to be a player opposing offenses fear when they take the field.
"That number needs to be higher," Delpit said of creating turnovers. "We need to set ourselves up right. Defense, we need to go get the ball. Ball in the air is ours. Offense, don't give it away. One of the most important stats in football is that turnover ratio and we need to be top, leading the league."
Delpit, in a prove-it-to-them year, is already saying and doing the right things that warrant a long-term extension.
