Maybe it is just me, but the first week of training camp feels like the longest one there is. For the majority of training camp through August, the Browns will have a preseason game each week to get ready for the 2024 campaign.

For the second straight season, the Browns stayed at The Greenbrier Hotel for a week to begin training camp. It was a week of bonding for the Browns, which they have talked highly about each of the last two seasons.

The Browns now make the trip back to Ohio where they will pick up things again on Sunday when they welcome fans to practice in Berea.

David Njoku is going to have a career year after having a career year

As the year went on last year and especially with Joe Flacco, Njoku had a huge finish to the season to help him make his first Pro Bowl. While Njoku has not been able to build a connection with Deshaun Watson, the two are working on just that happening. Over the offseason, Njoku went out to Los Angeles to train with Watson, which is exactly what you want from the leaders of your offense.

So far to open training camp, it appears the attention to chemistry is helping out. Njoku and Watson connected for a nice touchdown with Grant Delpit being the defender and Njoku has been often heard about early on. While doing what he wants against the defense for the most part through the first week, Njoku is setting up to have a really strong 2024 season.

You have to be happy with where Deshaun Watson is at right now

There were seven total practices at The Greenbrier for the Browns to open training camp and Watson was active throwing in each and every one outside of the final one on Friday. Watson took one day of rest for his shoulder to six days of throwing. This marks the most extensive throwing he has done since the injury last season.

Vibes are decently high around Watson following the first week of training camp and how he performs. He appears to be on pace with where the Browns want him to be and head coach Kevin Stefanski said as much.

“He’s done a nice job throughout the days that he’s throwing,” Stefanski said. “I thought he was doing really well. He’s focused, locked in even today, proud of him for being in the huddle, giving coaching points. I think that’s such a huge part of this as the starting quarterback is even on a day like this where he gets an off-day throwing, it’s not an off-day from a leadership perspective. And he did a nice job.”

It is unknown if Watson is going to play in the preseason at all, last year he did play in parts of two of the games. If the Browns feel good enough about things, they may just ride him through camp and joint practices until Week 1.

The injury approach the Browns are taking early on is a positive

Cleveland does have their fair share of injuries already to worry about early in training camp. Guys like defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and cornerback Greg Newsome II won’t be ready until around the start of the season and running back Nick Chubb and left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. are both on the PUP.

Linebackers Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Tony Fields are nursing minor injuries and wideout Jerry Jeudy made his first appearance in practice at camp just a couple of days ago. But in Myles Garrett’s case, the Browns used this week for him to ramp up. Garrett was reportedly off to the side doing conditioning and stretching during parts of the practices. When you’re at the level of Garrett, you probably don’t need to take in every part of camp.

Cleveland gave days off to multiple veterans at different times over the course of the last week. That just seems like the right thing to do with the gauntlet of the season coming up, getting guys into it too quick could backfire.
