On Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns landed a new offensive assistant to add to the staff.
According to multiple reports, Cleveland is hiring Duce Staley to be the team’s next running backs coach. Staley will take over for Stump Mitchell, who the Browns decided to go separate ways from after the season ended.
Staley comes over from the Carolina Panthers where was the assistant head coach and coached running backs for the 2023 season. Before that, Staley held the same role with the Detroit Lions from 2021-2022.
Perhaps Staley is most known for the 10 seasons he was with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2011-2020. He was an NFL running back for nine years between the Eagles and Steelers organizations.
Cleveland ran the ball at a clip of 112 yards per game, which was good for 10th best in the NFL. It is a spot that Cleveland will want to raise next year, back into the top ten.
Mitchell was with the Browns from 2019-2023 and joined the Browns one season before Kevin Stefanski becoming the head coach. He’s been the position coach of Nick Chubb for multiple seasons and we know how well that went. Chubb and the Browns have things to work through, but Staley would be lucky to walk into a job with a player the level of Chubb waiting for him, that is if he can return to a similar level pre-second significant knee injury.
After this move, expect the Browns to zero in on a new offensive coordinator before long.
