In many ways, it is a make-or-break year for Kevin Stefanski and Deshaun Watson.
After the Cleveland Browns gave the former Houston Texans quarterback a fully guaranteed contract, he didn't look impressive in the six games he played amid off-field issues in 2022.
Stefanski has paid close attention to Watson in training camp, and what the Browns' head coach has seen has already impressed him.
“Deshaun’s done a nice job, as we’ve talked about," Stefanski said on Tuesday. "He has come back really into training camp certainly ready to go. Spent a lot of time over his break with our players, getting his mind ready for this opportunity. So, he’s done a great job.”
The 2023 season offers Watson an opportunity to redeem himself following a lackluster 2022 campaign.
In his six starts last year, he held a QBR of 38.2. He threw for seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Yes, there were several other reasons for Watson's lack of production, but the reality of the situation is that Watson looked like a far cry from the quarterback he once was two seasons ago.
As a result, Watson has dropped in most national quarterback rankings lists. And his standing among league executives, scouts, and coaches has slipped as well. Reverting course on those flailing expectations is the order of business in 2023. Already, it appears that the Browns' starting signal-caller is heading in the right direction.
