Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game and sometimes they can be very unfair. That was on display with the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.
All-Pro return man Jakeem Grant Sr. suffered what is being called by head coach Kevin Stefanski a ‘significant’ knee injury. It is a ruptured patellar tendon, per Ian Rapoport.
After battling back from an Achilles injury that happened before last season, Grant was hurt on his very first play ever with the Browns.
It’s very unfortunate for Grant and the Browns. The plan was for Grant to be the return man and he was likely a lock for the 53-man roster, he was seen as a weapon.
Additionally, CB Denzel Ward suffered a concussion against the Chiefs, something he has struggled with so far in his career. It’s often a question of whether or not you should play starters in the preseason, this is an example of why some are against it.
With Greg Newsome II and Martin Emerson Jr., the Browns have the depth to be able to maintain a strong defense without Ward. But he is unquestionably their top cornerback and one they hope to have back in two weeks against the Cincinnati Bengals when Week 1 is here.
Preseason has come to a close and the Browns now turn their attention to churning out their 53-man roster.
