As if the loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4 wasn’t bad enough for the Cleveland Browns, another loss has come in a bit late.
Cleveland will be without backup defensive end Alex Wright for the season after he announced he would undergo surgery on a torn triceps that would be season-ending.
“After the Jacksonville game, I got an MRI on my tricep because I was dealing with pain from a strain in the same spot during joint practice vs the Vikings,” Wright said on X. “Somehow it became a freak accident because i didn’t even use my right arm on the play. So after finding out about it I still battled through the pain and all. Fast forward I got my last MRI checkup and it has progressed to worse from a partial tear. So now surgery is taking place which leads me to missing the rest of the season… anybody who knows me know I love football to death but 91 is going to be alright for sure. Everything happens for a reason, it’s in Gods plan. 91′s coming back with mean ass Vengeance I promise you 💯I STAMP THAT!”
For the third-year player that has developed nicely in the NFL, this is very unfortunate. The same can be said about the Browns, who are now short in depth off the edge. It sounds as if Wright battled through multiple games with a hurt triceps.
Wright went from having no sacks as a rookie in 2022 to having five last season with the Browns. The third-year player already had one this season and has played in 41 percent of Cleveland’s defensive snaps.
With the injury, the opportunity is now there for second-year defensive end Isaiah McGuire to take on an even bigger role. McGuire has a forced fumble this season and has been impactful on special teams while playing 28 percent of the defensive snaps. McGuire and veteran end Ogbo Okoronkwo will have to give the Browns capable ends behind Myles Garrett and Za’Darius Smith.
Wright was a third-round pick of the Browns in the 2022 NFL Draft and it isn’t out of the realm to think he could be an eventual starter for Cleveland. This setback is unfortunate, but it sounds as if Wright is ready to bounce back.
